A cat likes nothing more than marking its territory amongst your herbs, in the kids' sandpit, or simply to chill on the warm hood of your parked car. We were looking for an efficient, low maintenance solution to keep us on good terms with our cat-owner neighbor and discovered a possible low-cost tech solution...

Here's how our quest for a feline deterrent started: After owning a clunker for a long while, we were super proud to drive up to our street in a gleaming brand new car, parking it outside of our house.

Our joy lasted approximately 24 hours. The next day we stepped out of our front door, we discovered the neighbor's cat comfortably curled-up, sleeping on the hood of our barely new car, surrounded by dusty footprints all over. In an ill-fated attempt to "teach" the cat to keep away, we proceeded to make a scary noise while waving our arms around, which left our shiny car with little claw marks where the cat scuttled to get away.

From that moment on, we were on a mission. We needed to find an efficient solution to keep the neighbor's cat off our car. We searched online and found products ranging from tiger urine pellets to custom made car covers. Reading reviews and weighing up the pros and cons, in the end we opted for a hi-tech solution, an Ultrasonic Pest Repeller utilizing motion-detection to ward off animals that can hear and are annoyed by sounds imperceptible to humans. And ever since we've installed this device, our uninvited furry tailed intruder hasn't been seen since (this particular model isn't available in the US, but we'd guess similar models with the same tech can do the same job).

The Product
The Sonic Cat Repeller incorporates a sophisticated PIR (Passive Infra Red) detection system, which constantly monitors a fan shaped area of a 98 degrees arc up to a distance of 39 feet. The protected area is over 390 sq. feet of unobstructed space. The Big Cheese Sonic Cat Repeller detects animals moving into this area and triggers a burst of continuously variable ultrasound to repel them. Simultaneously the LED indicator on the front of the unit signals that it is activated.

How It Works
Ultrasonic pest repellers have been proven to work and are completely safe to use around children and animals. Basically, ultrasonic pest repellers are small devices that emit electronic or ultrasonic frequencies that are undetectable to most humans but uncomfortably high pitch to most animals. These high tech wonder devices emit frequencies from 30kHz to 55kHz, exactly the right noise to make the pests as miserable as their presence has made you.

Pros Very reasonably priced, very robust (after being buried under 2 ft of snow for days last year, our unit is still going strong), a benign/safe way to keep animals out of your outdoor area.

Cons No warning when battery dies.
