In our recent roundup of the best small-space air purifiers, we mentioned Austin Air. I own an Austin Air purifier (purchased through Allergy Buyer's Club), so I thought now would be a good time to expand a little on the company and provide a brief product review...

Based out of Buffalo, New York, Austin Air makes the air filters used by FEMA for emergency response situations. They produce a few different styles and sizes of air purifiers, all of which have a similar boxy metal enclosure that's set on top of casters. Within the product range, there are purifiers designed for people with allergies, babies, pets, and sleep disorders.

I own the Health Mate Jr. — it's well built, with a durable metal box encasing the filter. The compact design has casters that make it easy to move — great for access when you need to sweep underneath — and the HEPA filter is designed to last five years under moderate use, although I'd say the life span in my apartment has been more like three years. (I have a dog and my husband has allergies.)

I purchased the HealthMate because it has a 5-year warranty, a long-lasting HEPA filter, and a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) of 200-250, which is more than enough for my moderately sized bedroom. It's also reasonably priced at $360. Other high-quality brands can cost upwards of $800.

The only problem I've found with the HealthMate is its noise level at higher settings. On full blast, the metal frame hums a little, and I have trouble sleeping from the noise. It's perfectly fine at lower settings, so we usually keep the fan at medium or low.

Overall, it's a reliable, well-made option for a bedroom air filter, and it performs well if you have mild allergies or just want to breathe cleaner air while you sleep.

Austin Air products can be purchased online through the company or through retail dealers, including Allergy Buyer's Club and
