Best Kids Parties: Celebrate Brooklyn

Karine celebrated her surroundings as well as her son on his first birthday. She shares: Summer birthdays can be both a blessing and burden. On one hand, you can use the outdoors as a lovely natural backdrop for a party. On the other hand, the weather can be unpredictable, and families are often out of town and unavailable to attend the festivities. So we decided to keep our son's first birthday informal by hosting the party at the newly-developed Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Special Brooklyn-specific elements were woven in, like the bridge cookie favors and birthday sign made up of old subway maps (thanks to Cara Buffalino-Silman of Freshmade NYC). There were also bouncing balloons, long tunnels, floating bubbles, colorful hula hoops. The cupcakes were simple and incredible, made at a local bakery; it was hard to have just one.

However, our main focus was to celebrate WITH the community of diverse people who supported our family this first year. We had young African drummers play to officially and rhythmically welcome Malcolm into boyhood, marking the end of his time as a baby. Inspired by the casual and cultural spirit of the day, capoeristas of all ages spontaneously performed their skills. Other guests joined in.

It was a beautiful Brooklyn day, and our Brooklyn birthday boy enjoyed himself from beginning to end.

Thanks Karine!
